What is the difference between traditional plastering and using plaster machine?

What is the difference between traditional plastering and using plaster machine?

Depending on the complexity of your project, number of manpower can Vary during the project life cycle, yet, also depending on the skilled manpower available in the country to do that specific task, activity and project.

For example, here in United Arab Emirates, productivity of manpower can vary as an example; wall plastering. There are number of ways for the plaster work such as the traditional way (Sand and cement) mix. This traditional way mixed manually with water using hand shovel and other tools. There are also the spray machine, this way is not new way here in UAE but it has been widely used in large scale projects with many quantities and companies use either silo or 50 kgs bags. It depends on the logistic preparation of the project, for high rise buildings. Some times it is difficult to use the silo since it needs long rubber pips and pumps to pump the dry mix to the required level and many technical issues may appear in daily basis. Personally I prefer to use the machine with bags for such projects.

Pros and Cons for plastering using machines:

Pros:

  • Faster than the traditional way, a mason and helper can lay up to 80 SQ.M per 8 hours.
  • Easier as mix come ready and sprayed to the wall.
  • Quality of material and workmanship.
  • Gives smoother surface.
  • Easier in shifting the material using bags or the silo, since, it comes ready dry mix in sealed bags.
  • Less plaster thickness 12 mm to 15mm is enough
  • Easier than the traditional way to control waste
  • Required less manpower since it saves the time for mixing and shifting.

Cons:

  • Expensive comparing to the traditional.
  • There are many suppliers in the market and many ranges of quality.
  • Required technicians to be available in daily basis for trouble shooting and any technical issue may appear.
  • Increasing the plaster thickness may lead to cracks in the plaster walls if not treated properly.

The plaster machine with bags or silo is more efficient that the traditional way, however, in small projects such as villas using this way may not be cost effective. Hence, many contractors still using the traditional/manual way in laying plaster.

I, as a projects Manager and construction professional I would always recommend using the plaster machine if the project budget allow it. The traditional way still practical and can do the job but I would also recommend for all contractors and client to do some studies before deciding to use such technique such as; Cost/Benefit Analysis or SWOT analysis that can help you in deciding which technique is efficient to your project.
