Do you trust your contractors?

Do you trust your contractors?

There are numerous reasons for project failure in the construction industry, including a lack of planning, unclear project objectives, and communication gaps, among others. In social psychology, the desire to trust or be dubious of others is impacted by both partners’ intentions as well as their attitudes of each other. According to the researchers, trust is a mechanism that allows one party to withstand exploitation by another as a result of one partner’s commitment to another.

Many individuals regard having excellent relationships with other people to be essential; nevertheless, it is difficult to discern what to do in order to develop a good connection; in a hazy terminology, it entails honoring requests, avoiding conflict or confrontation, and working effectively.

There is no approach available these days to demonstrate that partnering, alliances, or any other type of collaboration can promote a good working environment; in fact, trust relationships do not happen overnight; they must be developed over time and maintained over time.

According to a study, while describing a relationship, trust is observed as quality in people, therefore when managers feel trust in sellers, they are most desired in developing partnerships. According to Morgan & Hunt(1994), ‘True’ relationship can then be identified by examining each partner’s perceptions.

Hence, Trust is defined as the willingness to rely on an interchange partner or party in whom one has faith (Moorman et al.,1992).

Because trust is a significant qualitative factor that allows subcontractors to smoothly participate with organizations as partners and able them to share data such as schedules and costs, and integrate those subcontractors/suppliers, it can maintain good relationships, smooth communication between main contractors and subcontractors/suppliers, and build commitment to achieve the mutual goals required. Deshmuck and Kanda (2007).

Furthermore, while trust does not prevent actual risks from occurring, it can be another perceived risk absorption technique in which risk is referred to the trusting relationships; it mitigates conflicts and uncertainties by creating contracts that will build and redevelop good relationships, and vice versa (Salonen, 2004; Lau, 2011).
